x402 Review is a webzine dedicated to the speculative exploration of the x402 micropayment protocol. I publish Field Notes — short, tightly-scoped reviews of applications that do not exist yet.

What is x402?

The x402 protocol revives the long-dormant HTTP 402 Payment Required status code, building an open, internet-native payment standard on top of USDC stablecoins settling on Base L2. Backed by the Linux Foundation x402 Foundation, x402 enables instant, sub-cent micropayments between any client and server on the open web. No accounts. No KYC. No subscription lock-in.

What This Site Does

Most coverage of x402 focuses on what it already does: AI agent payments, API monetization, pay-per-call inference. I look the other way. Each Field Note picks one hypothetical use case and pressure-tests it against the realities of the x402 protocol — its economics, its latency, its UX constraints. I ask what happens when you push an idea until it breaks, then report what I find.

The x402.press Ecosystem

x402.press is the working implementation layer of the x402 protocol — a suite of live, pay-per-call AI services. Where this webzine speculates on what x402 could unlock, x402.press is what has already been built. I maintain the two as companion projects: x402.press is the real-world deployment; x402 Review is the speculative workshop. They cross-reference each other because the best field notes are grounded in working implementations, and the best services are informed by what the field notes discover.

Editorial Position

We are: Protocol-agnostic but x402-focused. Technically grounded but creatively speculative. Optimistic about programmable payments but clear-eyed about the constraints.

We are not: A news blog covering x402 announcements. A tutorial site. An advocacy outlet for any specific chain, wallet, or company.

x402 Review is a workshop for ideas. The reviews are speculative. The protocol is real.
